Essential building blocks have been put in place but entrenched interests are avoiding reforms and delaying changes that will bring excellence to Rhode Island schools, especially our urban schools.
why change?
- Only 70% of ninth graders end up graduating high school
- 43% of fifth graders are not proficient in math, 34% in reading, and 46% in writing
- RI’s cost per pupil is the tenth highest in the country
what needs to be done?
- Consolidation of Administrations/Districts
- Statewide Teacher Contract
- Charter Schools
what you can do
- call your state representative and senator and tell them to support legislation to create a statewide teacher contract
- ask the head of your town or city school committee about cooperating with other towns and cities
- petition your local school committee to hold an informational hearing on plans to raise NECAP scores
- receive action bulletins from TransformRI
