Taxes & Spending

The State Budget should be a support to Rhode Islanders, not a burden. State fiscal policy should generate growth, not smother it.

Crafting a productive State Budget means taking a critical look at both spending and revenue.

Government at all levels must be focused, efficient, and deliver quality services at an affordable cost.

why change?

  • Rhode Island has the 4th highest tax burden (as % of income) in the country
  • Rhode Island has the third worst climate for business in the nation according to CNBC and the Small Business Climate Index.
  • Until this year, when the General Assembly followed the Governor’s lead, the State Legislature has consistently spent more than the state was taking in.

what needs to be done?

  • Continue to rein in spending.
  • Reform tax policy to make taxes fair, competitive, balanced, and efficient.
  • Get local government spending under control.
  • Balance the influence of Special Interests with the Public Interest
